Wegovy is an injectable weight loss medication with the active ingredient semaglutide.

If you're reading this article, you probably know what the drug does and how it works. If not, you can learn more in our guides:

Even if you know the basics, however, you probably still have lots of questions.

One of the most common questions patients ask us is, 'What's the best injection site for Wegovy?'

The good news is that the medication comes with step-by-step instructions on how to inject yourself. But that might not help you find the best injection site for you.

Here's what you need to know.

What are the Wegovy injection sites?

Wegovy's manufacturer, Novo Nordisk, recommends using one of these injection sites:

  • Either upper leg (at the front of your thigh)
  • Either upper arm
  • Your stomach (at least 2 inches away from your belly button)

These injection sites are recommended for a reason. Each has a thick layer of fat that's ideal for subcutaneous injections like Wegovy. Injecting here makes sure the medication is absorbed into your body at the right speed.

What's the best Wegovy injection site for me?

Most people find it easiest to inject themselves in the stomach or thigh. If somebody else is giving you the injection, they'll probably find it easiest to inject into your upper arm.

Picture of someone taking a Wegovy injection in any of the recommended sites.

But at the end of the day, it's up to you where you inject. You might want to try all the options as you go through your weekly doses.

Should I change where I inject with each dose?

Yes. You should change where you inject each time. This is to minimise the risk of infection.

However, you don't have to choose a different part of your body each time you inject. As long as you don't inject in exactly the same spot, it's fine.

What if I have trouble injecting?

If you're injecting Wegovy into your stomach, try a firmer site like your thigh or upper arm.

It might also help to stand up while injecting yourself in the stomach.

Where can I inject Ozempic?

Ozempic is an injectable medication with the same active ingredient as Wegovy (semaglutide).

This means the recommended Ozempic injection sites are exactly the same as Wegovy. You can inject it into your stomach, the front of your thigh or your upper arm.

However, it's worth noting that Wegovy and Ozempic are not completely the same. Ozempic is only approved as a diabetes treatment in the UK, while Wegovy is approved for weight loss.

That's why Wegovy is available in a higher maximum dose than Ozempic. It's this high dose that's most effective for weight loss.
